in my quest to shed light on all things brokeback mountain (i just came up with that quest some time between yesterday and today) here is a thread from datalounge with a believable list of actors who turned down either role in the film. since datalounge has the annoying propensity to be “too busy” a lot of the time, here is that post
Original Post
Below is a list of actors who turned down the roles, for various reasons, pressure from manager and publicists, etc., while the project was assigned to Gus Van Sant or Joel Schumacher and Ang Lee.
Russell Crowe, Leo DiCaprio, Vin Diesel, Collin Farrell, Ryan Gosling, Josh Harnett, Jude Law, Mathew McConnoughey Joaquim Phoenix Keanu Reeves Matt & Ben
As you can imagine, there are a few closet cases on that list.
JG felt he had nothing to lose or hide. Toothy Tile anyone! He is actually contemplating another career along with his sexuality.
Heath, on the other hand, I really applaud for reasons I cannot divulge.

you may or may not know that one of my favorite games is “recasting the movie.” i even recast ads on the subway. but there are a few interesting possibilities on that list, the most interesting pair probably would have been joaquin phoenix as ennis and ryan gosling as jack. we all know now how great joaquin is, and i dont know what kind of reputation ryan gosling has, but i think he is a really powerful actor. thanks to michelle, i saw him in “breaker high” and “young hercules” (fine, i was the one who really watched young hercules) and was more surprised than anyone when later on he became so good. if you doubt him, watch “the believer.” quite honestly, he gave me chills in that movie. also great in “murder by numbers” not the best movie in the world, but better than a lot in its genre.
all i can say is thank god ang lee was the director who ended up with this movie. gus van sant…i doubt it, and we certainly didnt need another one of these from shumacher:
