what i did on my christmas break

Filed under: commentary - rosanne @ 11:12 pm

in a nutshell, watched TV.  felt a little under the weather, but i did learn a few things:

1) the 100 calorie snack packs of microwave popcorn are amazing.  who knew that 100 calories was exactly the perfect amount of popcorn?

2) my mom was right, a week with a microwave and im wondering exactly what kept me from getting one for the last 15 years?

3) im pretty sure who’s the boss is still my favorite sitcom of all time and i am still annoyed that channel 9 stopped showing it before i go to work in the morning. or was it channel 11?

4) the problem with a lot of small indie movies is that they try to make “real” “working class” characters who grew up in queens and brooklyn, but they dress them in cute, hip retro outfits and let them do accents that they arent capable of, but really if they dressed them in more appropriate clothes (i.e., send the wardrobe department to macy’s not thrift stores) and gently said “well, you know, a lot of women of your generation who grew up in queens DONT have that strong, typical accent and there are other indicators that you can use to show that youre a native new yorker” the film might work a little better.

5) sometimes a 43-year-old man can marry a 19-year-old girl and it’s not totally gross.  it’s a little gross, but watching “my big fat fabulous wedding” or some shit on the WE network showed me a relationship that i kind of saw as working despite the fact that he could easily be her father.  he spent 775,000 dollars on a wedding for her and she didnt seem like she was taken advantage of or a gold digger and he didnt seem lecherous.  basically she wanted to be a wife and he wanted a young girl’s enthusiasm for life.

6) HBO on demand and Showtime on demand are limited.  basically, why should i be surprised that there’s nothing on demand when there’s nothing in programming.

7) my cat really does nothing but sleep.  and complain when you move her in her sleep.

i rearranged my room, but i did that before the break.

8) did john mctiernan direct anything aside from die hard?

9) re-ordered my netflix queue.

let’s go 2008!

i am the greatest birthday card of all time?

Filed under: commentary - rosanne @ 2:12 pm

muhammad ali is going to star in his own greeting card line.

The first eight cards in the collection will be birthday, thinking of
you, and anytime designs featuring iconic photos of Ali coupled with
some of his most recognized and repeated quotes. Products featuring
sound bites of Ali’s famous quotes, including cards and holiday
ornaments, are scheduled to hit shelves in 2008 and 2009 at American
Greetings retailers nationwide.

they are being rolled out in late january as part of Black History Month. i am not sure what greeting cards have to do with black history month.  in fact, usually i dont even realize it’s black history month until the 2nd or 3rd week in january when channel 13 plays carmen jones or the one w james earl jones as the boxer who dates the white woman.  thats actually a good movie.  anyway, long story short, you can all expect one of these cards when your special occasion rolls around.  do you think they will do wedding cards?

the better part of the interview was when she asked him if he was ever tempted to try HGH or steroids or whatever those guys were injecting on their asses and his answer was, and i may be paraphrasing “you know, ive never been tempted because ive never felt out-manned on the field.”  which is a pretty great answer.

patriotism

Filed under: commentary - rosanne @ 9:12 am

i never feel more american than when im watching the thanksgiving day parade.  3 and a half million people line the streets to see it (which i would not do.  a) i’m lazy but b) what a nightmare!  mobscene and you cant see a  thing)  and 50 million people like me, watching it on NBC in their pajamas.  it’s one of those things that one just DOES.   apparently christopher meloni and bob saget are going to be in the parade,  werd, but im excited because the cast of mary poppins is going to be in the parade!  have i mentioned how AMAZING mary poppins was?  honestly it was worth 100 bucks.  you cant say that about a lot of broadway shows.  but the musical was almost almost as good as the movie.  you cant really beat julie andrews and dick van dyke, and i missed the cartoon animals playing soccer (more than i figured i would, i was kind of hoping to see that.  the whole concept of jumping into a painting was mind-blowing and so enticing as a child.  i guess it still is) but i can officially go on record and say that disney knows how to put on a SHOW.

anyway, happy thanksgiving.  further to my last post, maybe it is against your religion, but put the history behind you and enjoy a day off with the rest of the country.

dont say “turkey day” or “t-day” or any other euphemisms. it’s thanksgiving. it’s not hard to say, it’s not against your religion, just call it thanksgiving.

thanks in advance,

okay, i used to love this movie and i had such a crush on jeremy. so now i see this for the first time in 20 or so years and man, is he a little twink. it makes sense, though. i also liked luke more than han. how embarrassing. whatever. at least gay little jeremy has a better haircut than mean old hubert.

if anyone manages to find me a copy of the ghosts of buxley hall on DVD i swear to god you will forever be my favorite person.

tooth hurty (that doesnt translate well to print)

Filed under: commentary - rosanne @ 4:09 pm

okay, this is totally nasty, so if you’re squeamish DONT CLICK THIS LINK

apparently there is a problem with people in the UK doing their own dentistry.  i saw this on the BBC’s webpage:

on the pull

okay, okay, insert british dentistry joke here.  fine.  but all of that aside, who thinks it’s okay to take out a tooth with pliers?  unless, of course, it’s a baby tooth.  in which case, everyone knows that you just tie a string around it and attach it to a doorknob and slam the door.  (has anyone else tried that?  i couldnt get the string to stay on the doorknob.  somehow it stayed on the tooth, though…)

beisbol

Filed under: commentary - rosanne @ 11:33 am

joke from bob dylan radio hour program “baseball” that came on my ipod this morning.

“If diamonds are a girl’s best friend why do so many girls get mad when you want to go to the ballpark?”

oh bob, you card.

also last night during the game the commentators were discussing the timing of george steinbrenner’s threat that if the yankees lost torre wouldnt come back.  one of them said “if this was a ploy, for a lack of a better word, to divert attention away from the players, then it worked.” well, whichever one of you said that, there is a better word.  it’s RUSE.

im done correcting people now.  back to regularly scheduled programming.
